The International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 was celebrated globally on March 8th and marked with a grand event at the Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) on March 10th, 2025. The commemoration began with a courtesy visit to the Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Peter Chukwuma, setting the stage for a day of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to gender equality.
International Women’s Day is a global occasion dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women and advocating for gender parity. It serves as a powerful reminder of the invaluable contributions women make to society and the persistent challenges they continue to face. This year’s theme, “Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, underscores the urgent need to uplift women in all aspects of life, recognizing their resilience, strength, and transformative impact on the world.
Engr. Peter Chukwuma, the MD/CEO of ISWSC, warmly embraced the celebration, acknowledging the profound significance of the day. In his address, he described IWD as not only a day of joy and reflection but also a day of action. He emphasized the importance of honoring women’s achievements, recognizing existing challenges, and collectively striving toward a more equitable and just future.
He passionately highlighted the role of women in various fields, particularly in science, culture, and professional industries, stating:
“As women in science, culture, and diverse professional spheres, you are the torchbearers of progress, innovation, and resilience. Your stories are woven with triumphs, struggles, and an unwavering determination to shape a world where opportunities are not dictated by gender but by passion, skill, and vision.”
He paid tribute to the trailblazers—women who courageously defied societal norms, shattered barriers, and made groundbreaking contributions in their respective fields. Their courage, he noted, serves as a beacon of inspiration, proving that no dream is too ambitious and no goal too distant.
However, even as we celebrate these milestones, the struggle for gender equality persists. Women continue to face disparities in leadership, education, and economic opportunities. Many still fight for their voices to be heard, rights to be acknowledged, and safety to be guaranteed.
Engr. Chukwuma stressed that collective action is essential in addressing these challenges:
“As members of ISWSC, our responsibility extends beyond excelling in our fields. We must lift others as we rise—mentoring, supporting, and empowering the next generation of women leaders. We must use our platforms to advocate for inclusivity and equity, ensuring these ideals become tangible realities.”
In an encouraging message to young women, he affirmed:
“Your dreams are valid, your potential is limitless, and your voice is powerful. The future is not something we wait for—it is something we create. Together, as women of ISWSC, let us continue to challenge biases, break barriers, and build a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive.”
The celebration concluded with a group photograph with the Managing Director, a moment captured for posterity and proper documentation—symbolizing the commitment of ISWSC to fostering a future where women are empowered, respected, and given the platform to excel.
