In continuation of the implementation of 2023 Performance Improvement Action Plans (PIAPs) activities and the PDO of NG-SURWASH programme, Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) in partnership with Safety Awareness and Environment Support Initiative (SAESI), Imo State Command, commemorated World Environment Day. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day celebration is apt and aligns with ISWSC’s vision of aggressive Social and Behavioural Change Campaign (SBCC) to curb pollution of our freshwater bodies and waterways.
The event which took place at ISWSC Resource Centre was to create further awareness on the danger of plastic pollution on our environment. In his keynote address, the Managing Director/CEO of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu warned that the planet earth has suffered from natural disasters, emphasizing that human disaster is another threat that will befall the earth. He noted that the impact of human activities through the increasing pollution, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and other uncontrolled activities are threatening the survival of our environment and health.
Engr Ugoanyanwu stated that human activities can have detrimental effects on freshwater bodies and our health. He also expressed concern about the rapid extinction of our rivers due to these human activities. While feeding questions from students who participated in the programme, Engr Ugoanyanwu highlighted the need for a collective effort from the government, civil society, and individuals to reverse the trend and save our environment, adding that no one should wait for the government to do everything. He stressed that we must adopt sustainable practices in the management of our environmental resources, including reducing plastic waste and pollution and strictly enforcing environmental laws.
Meanwhile, while speaking on the theme of 2023 World Environment Day “Beat the Plastic Pollution”, one of the guest speakers of the occasion, Mrs Anderline Nnodimele took the participants through the meaning of pollution. She urged them also to reduce the use of plastic that does not have recyclable purposes. She also advised the participants to cultivate the habit of proper waste management, adding that plastic takes years before it decomposes yet the toxins from it affect human health when they contaminate our environment.
The highpoint of the event was multiple cash awards from the Managing Director/CEO of ISWSC to participating students who correctly answered questions on what they learnt from the occasion. World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5.
