The Managing Director/CEO of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) has received the Special Adviser on IMSUTH to Governor Hope Uzodimma and some 500-Level students of the Imo State College of Medicine, Orlu, who embarked on an excursion to ISWSC.
According to Dr Ernest Nwaigbo, who doubles as the Chief Resident Officer of Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) and SA on IMSU College of Medicine, the visit was part of the students’ academic curriculum and aimed at familiarizing the students with the water and sewer systems in Imo state and to learn how the Corporation is working to provide clean water and sanitation to Imo residents.
Collaborating with Dr Nwaigbo’s statement, Miss Favour Opara, who was the Group Leader of the students, explained that the visit would cover ISWSC’s water treatment processes, water quality testing, sewerage treatment, importance of sanitation, water conservation, among others.
Upon arrival, the SA and the students were warmly received and welcomed by the Managing Director/CEO of the Corporation Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu, who reeled out a brief history of the Corporation and the processes of water sourcing, treatment and distribution.
In his words, Engr Ugoanyanwu said, “ Access to safely managed water leads to good health. That is why, at ISWSC, we do not only preach that water is life but also we try our best to ensure that sanitation is dignity. When you go to the hospital, you will discover that most of the ailments you and I are suffering are linked to unsafe water and water pollution. Human activities are also affecting our fresh water body. All these also damage our health.”
Heads of Water Services and Sanitation Engr Henry Adiruo and Mrs Lillian Oledinma also spoke briefly in turn about water conservation as well as the importance of maintaining good hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent waterborne diseases.
In his closing remarks, the Managing Director thanked the students for their visit and encouraged them to take the knowledge and experience gained from the visit back to their communities and school to work towards improving sanitation and water access. He also urged them to always speak up against water body pollution, as this affects human health.
The visitors were then taken on a tour of the Corporation’s facilities at Otamiri Waterworks, where they were astonished by the size of the Corporation’s water treatment plant and the many processes involved in treating raw water to make it safe for consumption. They were also shown the various stages involved in the distribution of water throughout the state, from the treatment plant to the various water storage tanks and finally to households and businesses.
The students also learned about the Corporation’s efforts to promote liquid waste sanitation in the state despite being new in the Corporation’s mandate. They also learned how the Corporation is working to expand the sewerage systems in the state to provide access to more people.
During a question-and-answer session with our resident engineer and the Head of Laboratory Unit, the governor aide and the students asked various questions about the challenges facing the Corporation and how they are being addressed. These were also responded to by ISWSC.
The visit was an eye-opening experience for the students, as they got to see firsthand the processes involved in providing clean water and sanitation. The excursion will also help in fostering a partnership between the college and the Corporation towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which is to ensure access to water and sanitation for all.
