On March 18, 2025, students from Alvana Model Secondary School and Divine Secondary School embarked on an educational excursion to the Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC). The trip, led by their Agricultural Science teachers, Mr. Ukaoha Johnston and Mrs. Emmanuel Ezinne, was designed to enhance their understanding of water management and its significance in agriculture.
The excursion commenced at the ISWSC headquarters, where the Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Peter Chukwuma, alongside the management staff, warmly welcomed the students. A formal reception was held, followed by a group photograph to commemorate the visit.
Accompanied by Communication Officer, Odom Uzoamaka, the students were then escorted to the Otamiri Water Treatment Plant for a field study. The visit aimed to provide firsthand knowledge of water treatment processes and its crucial role in agricultural irrigation, which is essential for improved food production, enhanced living standards, and the fight against hunger in today’s economy. Additionally, the excursion sought to inspire entrepreneurial interest among the students in the water sector.
Upon arrival at the Otamiri plant, the students were warmly received by the Resident Engineer, Ndubuisi Denis Nwabueze, and other technical staff. They were taken on a guided tour of the facility by the resident Engr Engineer where they received a detailed explanation of the various water treatment processes and the functions of the equipment used.
The highlight of the visit was an insightful session conducted by Quality Control Laboratory Technician, Mrs. Stephen Blessing. She provided a comprehensive breakdown of the water purification process, from initial treatment to final production. Engaging with curiosity, the students posed various questions regarding water treatment, all of which were expertly addressed by the lab technician. Through this interactive session, the students gained invaluable knowledge about water safety, purification, and its applications in agriculture.
The excursion was a resounding success, enriching the students with practical insights into water management. The visit concluded with another group photograph at the Otamiri Treatment Plant, marking a memorable and educational experience for all participants.
