The Girl Child Initiative Outreach, in collaboration with the Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC), hosted a remarkable conference at the ISWSC Resource Centre to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child.
The event focused on fostering a vision for girls’ future, equipping them with essential leadership skills and self-confidence, and promoting education and empowerment to prepare them for future endeavors. It also sought to address critical issues such as gender-based violence and discrimination, while providing a platform for participants to network and exchange ideas.
IMr. Ohaeri Kelechi Stanley De Evangelist, CEO/Coordinator of the Girl Child Initiative Outreach, in his Opening remark emphasized the importance of eradicating gender inequality and creating a society where girls can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination.
The event attracted a host of distinguished dignitaries, including the Honourable Commissioner of Youth and Talent Hunt, Dr. Emeka Mandela Ukaegbu; the Managing Director and CEO of Imo State Water and Sewage Corporation, Engr. Peter Chukwuma; Barrister Lulu Njoku (represented by Deacon Chibueze); Mrs. Jennifer Chineyenwa; Rose Ikechukwu Anyanwu, CEO of Arise African Network; and Mr. Njiakor Iheajiagwa.
Keynote speakers presented insightful discussions on various topics aligned with the theme of the International Day of the Girl Child. Engr. Peter Chukwuma delivered an engaging presentation on “Water: The Lifeline for Girl Child Development.” His address covered critical aspects, including:
The importance of access to clean water for girls’ health and hygiene
The role of water in enhancing girls’ education and economic empowerment
Challenges in water accessibility and potential solutions
Water as the foundation of life and its impact on educational development
The event also featured vibrant participation from several schools, including Fidel Oxford Secondary School, Rochas Foundation College Owerri, Umudagu City College, St. John’s Leonard Secondary School Owerri, Methodist High School Orji, Baptist High School Owerri, and Positive Mind Academy.
As the program concluded, certificates of participation and awards were presented to attendees, recognizing their involvement and contributions. The event ended on a celebratory note with group photographs, capturing the success and camaraderie of the day for future reference and documentation.
