Since the creation of Imo State, successive administrations have made efforts to provide Safely managed water, sanitation, and hygiene WASH but with minimal success. Despite the enormous Public Sector Investment, the WASH Sector did not show any remarkable improvements. The Imo State WASH Sector was in a dire need of an administration that will rescue the state from the menace caused by poor WASH Service as women and girls suffer approximately from lack of adequate WASH Services and bear the burden of negative effects of gender-based violence (GBV).
Upon taking over leadership in Imo State, His Excellency distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma keyed into repositioning of the WASH Sector of the state as he entered into partnership with developmental partners which included USAID and the WorldBank. These partnerships have so far been instrumental to revitalizing the WASH Sector of the state with programs like the USAID E-WASH, and now the WorldBank NG-SURWASH Program.
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) are important to human health and crucial sustainability for existence. WASH is not only for health but immensely contributes to standard of living, creating resilience in communities living in healthy environments, providing clean and safely managed water and sanitation, End to open defecation, mainstreaming gender equality as well as quality education as aligned to the primary goals of SDGs 3, 4, 5, and 6.
In a bid to close the ravaging gap created by inadequate access to safely managed water and sanitation services in the State, the State Governor, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma has strategically outlined Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) as one of his main agenda towards improving the health and well being of the citizens. Thus, I want to use this medium to inform you of the ongoing WASH sector information gathering for the benchmarking the status of the sector prior to His Excellency intervention. The team will be touring communities/institution for fact finding and documentation of the state of WASH facilities which may include key informant interviews, focus group discussions and visit to key water schemes.
