Incidents of Theft and Vandalization at the Intake Station of Otamiri Waterworks & the State Secretariat Complex Water Scheme
Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) is deeply concerned to report unfortunate incidents that occurred at its intake station of Otamiri Waterworks and Imo State Civil Service Secretariat Complex Water Scheme, Owerri
In the early hours of today, Monday, 16 October 2023, unidentified individuals, suspected to be miscreants, forcibly gained access to the ISWSC premises. During their unlawful intrusion, they inflicted significant damage to the perimeter block fence, breaching the security infrastructure that safeguards this vital facility.
The malicious act extended to our facilities where the miscreants vandalized and carted away the roofing of one of the toilet facilities and damaged the diesel tank. It is worth noting that this incident occurred during a period of heavy downpour that lasted for hours which may have contributed to their actions going unnoticed.
ISWSC is deeply committed to maintaining and providing reliable, safely managed water and sanitation services to the residents of Imo State. However, such acts of theft and vandalism stand condemned as they are targeted not only to disrupt our operations but also to pose a threat to the essential services we provide.
The Managing Director and CEO of ISWSC Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu has immediately visited the site. Meanwhile, in response to a recent report of theft and vandalization of yet another ISWSC’s facility, the Managing Director of ISWSC also conducted a visit on Thursday, 12 October 2023 to assess a situation which unidentified miscreants targeted yet another facility situated on the premises of the Imo State Civil Service Secretariat Complex. These individuals brazenly cut off and carted away vital cables connected to the transformer responsible for powering the water scheme serving the complex and its surrounding areas.
The Managing Director has already directed that an internal investigation into these incidents is conducted to determine the extent of the damage and identify those responsible. We are also working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
We urge the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals near our facilities to the authorities. ISWSC also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding our shared resources, as acts of vandalism impact the entire community.
