The Managing Director and CEO of the Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC), Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu, took a center stage yesterday in a panel discussion on “Innovative Strategies for Revamping Safely Managed Water Supply System in Nigeria.” This momentous occasion unfolded during the 2023 International Water Conference organised by the Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Engr Ugoanyanwu, recognized as a distinguished panelist for the event, captivated the audience with his insights and visionary approach to addressing Nigeria’s water supply challenges.
In his address, Engr Ugoanyanwu not only highlighted the pressing issues facing Nigeria’s water supply system but also advocated states’ water agencies to develop innovative strategies that guide decisions on how resources are to be used to meet their objectives for innovation, deliver value and build competitive advantages. He opined that for a successful and sustainable innovative strategy for revamping safely managed water supply and sanitation systems in Nigeria the strong nexus between WASH and energy efficiency has to be acknowledged and addressed together.
Sharing further insights and contributing to the vibrant exchange of ideas, he argued that for innovation strategy to be successful there should be an innovation culture, executive buy-in, skilled/IT savvy personnel, reward & recognize mechanisms and defined KPIs. He therefore suggested biogas generation and recovery, ground mounted solar arrays and thermal hydrolysis to generate biogas as some innovative strategies to cut down the enormous cost energy currently confronting the State Water Agencies (SWAs).
Engr Emeka Ugoanyanwu, who was the pioneer Chairman of the Imo State Chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers (NIWE) and a distinguished fellow of the institution advocated water reuse, water conservation, source water and watershed protection to enhance sustainable provision of safely managed water in Nigeria.
Lasting between 11 and 14 September this year, the 2023 International Water Conference, themed “Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Governance in Nigeria: Rethinking Strategies and Strengthening Policies,” attracted a diverse audience of sector professionals, investors, development partners, academia, and government officials. It served as a platform for robust discussions and a call to action to revitalize Nigeria’s water supply and sanitation systems.
