NG-SURWASH: ISWSC, Other IAs Meet with World Bank and FPIU on Implementation Progress

In more significant continuation of the implementation of the Performance Improvement Action Plan (PIAP) activities and the PDO for Q2, Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) with other implementing agencies in the state engaged in a technical discussion with representatives of World Bank and the Federal Project Implementation Unit (FPIU). The meeting, held at the ISWSC Conference Hall on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, around 11:30 AM, saw a productive exchange on the progress, challenges, and remedies associated with the action plan.

The gathering included Awa Diegne, World Bank Task Team Lead; Judith Warmate (World Bank Task Team Leader); Anne Cestori, World Bank Practice Manager; Engr Maina Rabiu Madaki, FPIU Water Supply; Uche Iwuala, FPIU Social Safeguard Officer (SSO); Engr Oyetunde Oyedokun, FPIU Procurement Officer; ISWSC management team and concerned staff, and representatives of SPIU, RUWASSA and ISSTOWA were present, demonstrating the importance of the discussions.

In his opening remarks, Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu, the Managing Director and CEO of ISWSC, extended a warm welcome to World Bank and the FPIU representatives. Engr Ugoanyanwu outlined the agenda, detailing the scope of his slide presentation and announcing that the acting Head of Sanitation, Mrs Lilian Oledinma, would also present on the status of sanitation activities.

The Managing Director elaborated on the implementation status of the current programme, covering PforR DLIs 1 to 7. He highlighted the achievements of ISWSC in the PIAP activities, including ongoing and pending efforts, while emphasizing soft component achievements such as the launch of the Corporation’s website, establishment of round-the-clock internet service, operationalization of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, establishment of a Rapid Response Unit, and various public engagement initiatives. He also acknowledged challenges and mentioned the forthcoming commencement of construction activities.

Ugoanyanwu underscored ISWSC’s focus on soft components of PIAPs to expedite progress before the actual construction phase. Mrs Lilian Oledinma, in her slide presentation, provided insights into the Urban Sanitation PIAP activities for 2023, outlining accomplishments, ongoing efforts, and pending actions in the field of sanitation.

The meeting gained further momentum during the response session, where World Bank and FPIU representatives contributed valuable suggestions and technical insights to accelerate ISWSC’s activities. The engagement reflected a collaborative effort to enhance the implementation of the PIAP and drive positive outcomes for water and sanitation in Imo State.
