In line with the 2023 Performance Improvement Action Plans (PIAPs) activities and the PDO of NG-SURWASH programme, Scientific Officers and a team of the IT students of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) recently conducted comprehensive surface water quality testing at Otamiri River. This initiative is part of ISWSC’s Service Improvement Plan (SIP) aimed at enhancing surveillance activities and maintaining high water standards for the well-being of Imo residents.
Otamiri River serves as one of the significant water sources for communities across the state, making it crucial for ISWSC to monitor its water quality regularly. To bolster their efforts and leverage modern technological capabilities, the seasoned Scientific Officers assembled at the banks of Otamiri River early morning with the enthusiastic IT students who brought fresh perspectives and innovative methodologies to the water testing processes. Equipped with advanced water testing equipment, they embarked on a meticulous analysis of various parameters determining water quality.
The comprehensive study involved, among other parameters, testing for key indicators such as pH levels, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, and the presence of various pollutants and contaminants. Data collected during the study is critical for ISWSC in understanding the river’s health and devising appropriate strategies to address any potential issues affecting the water quality.
Mrs Ngozi MaryRose Onwuasor, Quality Control Officer and Head of Laboratory Unit of the Corporation, emphasized the importance of such initiatives stating, “The surveillance exercise is aimed at enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of our water quality monitoring, ultimately ensuring that the water supplied to our citizens meets the highest standards of safety and purity. It is also a practical learning point for the IT students, as it allows them to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world challenges, making a positive impact on the community while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.”
As the testing phase of this joint project concluded, ISWSC staff and the IT team have analyzed the gathered data in detail which would inform the formulation of evidence-based strategies and action plans to safeguard Otamiri River’s water quality effectively.
ISWSC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of water quality, and with its proactive initiatives, it continues to set an example for other water corporations in Africa.
