In continuation of the implementation of 2023 Performance Improvement Action Plans (PIAPs) activities, the MD/CEO of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation (ISWSC) with some key management staff of the Corporation received in audience the leadership of Youth Wing Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Imo Chapter.

The association led by its team lead Amb Robert Kennedy Asuzu stated that the essence of the courtesy call to ISWSC was to canvas for partnership with the Corporation on their campaign against drug abuse among the youths.

While addressing the Managing Director and some key staff of ISWSC, the team lead stated, β€œAs a stakeholder in the state your leadership and influence play a vital role in the shaping policies and program that can positively impact lives of our youths.” He further informed ISWSC that the visit was to provide a comprehensive understanding of the association’s project and its commitment to uplift the youths, so that they can better contribute to the development of the state.

Another member of the team Barr Chinemerem Udokwu informed ISWSC that other key stakeholders would be involved in the campaign which would commence with a symposium that shall be held during the International Youths’ Day come August. He disclosed that the theme of the symposium is β€œTackling Drug Abuse and Promoting Control Measures Among the Youths”, adding that it is specifically targeted at the teenagers in the secondary school.

Collaborating with the voices of the two previous speakers, Miss Sofia Onuoha highlighted the relationships between drug abuse and mental health, even they affect water sources.

In response, the Managing Director Engr Emeka Celestine Ugoanyanwu welcomed the leadership of YOWICAN, noting that the campaign is apt and aligns with ISWSC’s vision of Aggressive Social and Behavioural Change Campaign to curb the danger of drug abuse among the youths, particularly on the male and female genders, emphatically adding that the menace is so prevalent among the male gender that the men abandon their responsibilities and become aggressive at home. The Managing Director also opined that drug abuse contributes to the number of cases of domestic violence and theft in the society.

Speaking further about the theme of the campaign and symposium, the MD/CEO of ISWSC expressed deep concern over the escalating rates of drug abuse, especially among the youths, and emphasized the urgency to address this menace. He highlighted the correlation between drug abuse and the water sector, as drug-related substances often find their way into water bodies through improper disposal and sewage systems. This poses a grave threat to both the environment and public health, as these contaminants can eventually infiltrate drinking water sources.

He concluded his remarks by offering unwavering support to the youth association, urging them to also take advantage of the radio programme which ISWSC is hosting.

In response to the ISWSC’s commitment to support YOWICAN, the leadership of the youth association expressed their gratitude and optimism for a collective impact on society. They applauded ISWSC’s dedication to improving water quality and safety, emphasizing that access to clean and uncontaminated water is crucial for combating drug abuse and fostering a healthy community.

As part of their collaboration, both ISWSC and YOWICAN are set to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign in line with the Corporation’s aggressive Social and Behavioural Change Campaign (SBCC) through its radio programme to educate the public, particularly young individuals about the dangers of drug abuse and its potential consequences on water sources, sanitation and public health. By promoting responsible waste disposal and proper sewage management, the joint efforts aim to reduce the contamination of water bodies and environment as well as ensure the well-being of Imo people.

The partnership between ISWSC and YOWICAN sets a powerful example of how government institutions and civic organizations can unite to address societal issues effectively. It also underscores the collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment and the health of future generations.
