Orientation programs for all utilities/corporations can not be over emphasised as it is a capital based self development sufficiency for most staff. Today witnessed the first day of the two days orientation program for all staff of Imo State water and Sewerage corporation which will run from 23rd-24th November 2021 and had an attendance of 109 participants present.

The anchor presenters which include the HOD Administration/HR Mr. Zeph Osuji and PRO/Head Communications Unit Assumpta Okorie (Mrs) kicked off the programme with an opening prayer led by Mr. Zeph Osuji (HOD Administration/HR) at exactly 10 am.

The PRO/Head Communications Unit Assumpta Okorie (Mrs.) took us through the introduction segment where all participants introduced themselves and were officially ushered into the program.
The Permanent secretary Ministry of Water Resources was ably represented by the DAF Mr. Duru who gave the opening remarks as he welcomed everyone present and thanked the organisers of the program. He encouraged participants to ask question where need be and work tirelessly to actualize the goals of the corporation.

Taking us further was a lecture by a Resource Person Lady Nkechi Nwogu on ADMINISTRATION AND HUMAN RESOURCES. Her discuss centered on how to become the utility of the future by understanding the mission and vision statement, as well as knowing the core values of the corporation, as it is the paramount duty of everyone to take the utility higher to achieve its goals. In order to achieve this, we need to consider how to satisfy our customers, collaborate with each other, show professionalism, maintain integrity of the corporation and Maintain good team work and  transparency.

She also looked into the seven departments which make up the corporations which includes, Administration, Accounts,  Planning, Commercial, Water Resources, Sanitation and Engineering.
She emphasised the need for every staff to always work to improve the aims of the corporation so that the objectives of the corporation will not be defeated. We should also know the government business guided service such as public service rules, financial instructions, circulars e.t.c are crucial.
The resource person also spoke on several practice which are not acceptable in the public service conduct, which includes:- misconduct, conviction on criminal charge, absence from duty unauthorized, disobedience of lawful orders such as refusal to proceed on leave, transfer or to accept posting. Negligence, suppression or falsification of records, engaging in political activities, fighting on duty, dishonest, insubordination, lack of integrity etc. As employees of the corporation, you must be loyal to the government by displaying honesty in your duties, being courageous, cooperate, be tactful, industrious, understand the scope of work and leave a clear understanding of your job plans. Knowing your KPI, achievable targets is also an important aspect of these loyalty parameters to the government.

Furthermore, we have to avoid procrastination, have an ownership attitude, be punctual to duty and willing to put extra hours when needed etc. All these can however be achieved if such an individual has EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.
Emotional intelligence is the different ways of expressing our emotions. The different ways we perceive, control, and evaluate our emotions. Emotional intelligence is what gives stability in the interactions or performance of our duty. The control of our emotions and the effects it has on staff and customers is very important. Both internal and external customers should be considered in this level.
Conclusively, she encouraged all staff to put on a positive attitude to duties because our attitude has effects on everything.

At this point the MD/CEO Engr. Emeka Ugoanyawu FNSE FNIWE NPOM FOSHA KSJI was welcomed to the occasion.
The MD/CEO started his address by welcoming all staff who have come for the orientation as he took a drill to explain the essence and need for this orientation as certain lapses have been noticed in the corporation.

Firstly, the essence of propagating the Emotional Intelligence was buttressed extensively as it is very crucial for the corporation to grow.
And secondly, the essence of Social Intelligence was emphasised as it will help all staff to be socially grounded in our interpersonal relationship.
Further on his address, the MD took a deep dive to explain the mission, vision and core values of the corporation, because anyone that must work or flow with the corporation must buy into the corporations beliefs. Taking us back  two years ago, the MD explained that after establishing the mission, vision and core values of the corporation, they took a step to establish Branding, and that was what led to the establishment of the fountain as displayed even on our logo. The corporation has a vision for the future where it will independently pay the staff of the corporation. The utility is working hard to secure the future for all staff in the corporation, and thus the staff must in return work hard to achieve this vision.

After the branding, the Water Policy and other Polices which embodies the Modus Operands was also constituted as the USAID and Worldbank set in. He continued by establishing the fact that we also have a Customer Service chatter which talks about professionalism, customer relationship, etc. The corporation also has a Sexual Harassment Policy which talks about the procedures and consequences of such act. The Personal Hygiene Policy as well as other Polices running in the corporation were also digressed upon.

The Managing Director also brought to the attention of all staff that in the coming months, the daily/weekly personal Evaluation Form will be issued to all staff to carry out personal assessment by evaluating ourselves.

Further on the lecture series is the lecture delivered by Dr. Collins Awaeze on Public Relations, Communication, and Imo state Water and Sewerage Corporation.

He defined the concept of Public Relations in detail as he also explained that it is a planned and sustained effort as it is a policy and a management function. Taking a deep dive, he went further to explain who the “PUBLIC” is to the corporation. On further enlightenment into the lecture, he spoke on COMMUNICATION as it means to share, impact, participate, exchange, transmit, or to make common. It is simply a dissemination of common information between the sender and receiver in an understanding manner as communication has moved to internet, website, emails etc.
Both public relations and communications should simultaneously work in ISWSC by involving everyone working in the corporation, upgrading ourselves and connecting to the modern communication practices, thus effective public relations are implemented through actions and communications by also bearing in mind that effective public relations and communications will yield both individual benefits as well as corporate benefits.

In conclusion, he said the effective practice of public relations and communications will ensure a profitable utility or corporation as he encourage participants to effect the ISWSC corporate philosophy, missions and visions to achieve set targets.

Reiterating further, the managing director took a turn to emphasize the essence of communication as it concerns the utility. He also used several case studies to buttress the need for seriousness and dedication of all staff in order to achieve desired result.
In taking us further, the MD handed the baton over to Chief Dr Ezeribe Okonkwo(HOD PLANNING) who spoke to the new staff on several aspects of self-development in the corporation. He encouraged the new staff to associate with the old staff in order to learn certain necessary ethics of the job. He also spoke on the principle of “synergy” which stipulates that no single person can do it alone. No department can work as an independent body; we must work as a group to improve the corporation.

Along same vein, Engr. Frank Onyeji,( HOD SANITATION) took over to encourage the new staff. He gave special thanks to the Managing Director/ CEO and the Management staff of ISWSC for organizing this orientation as he encouraged all newly employed staff to put in their best to achieve the corporation’s goals.

Engr. Udaege (Project Coordinator SURWASH) also spoke on the importance of the water sector, hygiene, and sanitation. He thanked His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma the Executive Governor of Imo State for his interest to reposition the water sector of the state and his interest in the SURWASH Program. He encouraged the participants to work hard and sustain the corporation.

On a lighter note, the HOD Administration/ HR Mr. Zeph Osuji took a deep dive into the civil service ethics and  administrative procedures as he explained certain ethics of civil service, the procedures, actions, and consequences in the civil service as well as the corporation. He also spoke on protocols, promotions, seniority grading parameters, as well as documentation processes.

Finally, the DAY 1 Orientation Program ended with a closing prayer led by HOD Sanitation Engr. Frank Onyeji at exactly 1:40 PM
