The title of this piece was culled from a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
It succinctly describes what is happening in our dearest Imo State.
Why is our tap dry in the state?
I remember the Afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s song “water no get enemy”
Who is afraid of providing clean potable drinking water for Imo citizens.? What happened to our Ministry of Water resources? Renamed Public Utility and Rural Development under Ohakim led Administration.
My concern here is that during the administration led by Rochas Okorocha water no longer flows in our taps to our various homes. Rather I see fountains flowing with water on Orlu road junction and the freedom square yet not to drink in our homes why? Water no longer flows in our dried taps. Owerri town, Aladinma, World Bank Area, Amakohia, Egbada, Orji, Works Layout,
Akwakuma and many other towns too numerous to list out here depends on borehole water drilled by the citizens to provide alternative sources of water supply for themselves. To rub salt on the citizen’s injury Rochas Okorocha led administration wants to profit from the bore-hole drilled as self-help by the Imo citizens by asking every household to pay levies per bore-hole owned. Several years ago, our case was not like this, His Excellency Dr.Ikedi Godson Ohakim led administration made provisions for 1,325 water schemes fully completed and operational. While 32 other water project was rehabilitated and converted to solar power.
Today the entire urban areas in the state lack clean potable drinking water, yet the facilities are there in the state. The last time our taps brought forth water was during Sir Ikedi Ohakim’s regime. Immediately Rochas came on board our taps dried up. The 1357 water schemes he inherited all went moribund. So many things are drying up in Rocha’s regime, our roads became dry, Salaries dried up, Pensioners allowances also dried up, Gratuity dried up, many things dried up in IMO state our Orient Radio and TV also dried up. Yet as a sitting governor he floated a personal FM radio station.
One may ask why water?
Provision of clean potable water happened to be a critical index in measuring compliance with the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) requirement. Ohakim led administration was conscious of this and took great interest in making access to clean water for the citizens a priority. That accounted for the massive investment in Water Schemes in IMO state.
Ihedioha, who had barely stayed less than 8months had put in the machinery in place to revive the water scheme in the state.
Now that Uzodinma is on board I hope he will make our taps flow again.

“Water water everywhere, Nor any drop to drink”
