Staff of Imo State Water and Sewerage Corporation recently embarked on a clean up exercise and facility tour of Otamiri water works. The exercise which held on Thursday 12th November 2020 afforded the  management the opportunity to  showcase ongoing rehabilitation works at Otamiri Head works. The exercise also afforded staff and guests the opportunity to see the massive rehabilitation works being undertaken by the Governor of Imo State, His Exellency Sen. Hope Uzodimma and our development partner USAID funded EWASH program.  The works undertaken by the state government includes complete renovation of the Chemical building, construction  of conveniences within the waterworks, block perimeter fencing of the facility, repair/replacement of Dosing pumps/accessories, installation of Solar powered security lights with real time cameras, bulk provision of treatment chemicals & reagents, Supply 60,000 liters of AGO (desel) and protection of otamiri river shed, among others.

The management & staff in addition appreciated the USAID funded Ewash program in the State for the supply/installation of filter nozzles and filter media, bulk meters, mobile testing kits, reflux valves, new dozing pumps among others.

The MD/CEO Imo State Water and sewarage Corporation, Engr Emeka Ugoanyanwu FNSE FNIWE KSJI in his address thanked His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma for his commitment to restoring the WASH sector in the State. He assured that  the state governments partnership  with USAID is yielding positive results and reiterated His Excellency’s commitment to strengthening the partnership further. He thanked  the USAID funded Ewash program for their continued assistance which has taken the WASH sector in Imo State to the next level. He recalled that with the support of USAID funded Ewash program Imo State today has the necessary legal and institutional frameworks to tackle the problems confronting the sector including the new Imo State WASH law and the State WASH policy among others. He expressed dismay about the continued violation of the Otamiri river and destruction of the watershed by illegal human activities including development of housing estates around and within the waterworks in violation of Nigerian and State laws and illegal dredging activities inspite of the Governor’s warnings. He thanked the workers for their response and active participation in the exercise,

The workers collectively condemned the continued Violation of Otamiri Head works by some intruders who built  residential buildings within the  premises and appropriation of land earmarked for 2nd phase of the waterworks. They also condemned the provocative open defecation & dumping of refuse into the river. These irresponsible actions increases  the cost of water treatment and pose existential threat to the regional water scheme and indeed other water schemes across the state etc.

The SA to the Governor on Urban Water Supply, Honourable Tanana Olivtan Biaduo in his address warned those illegal occupants to vacate the premises and highlighted the danger of erecting houses on top Water infrastructure and within the headworks. He promised to take the matter up with the relevant Commissioners and agencies to ensure that extant laws are enforced. He commended the management & staff of the Corporation for the clean up exercise and thanked the Governor for the massive work going on at Water works. The Honourable Commissioner for information despatched journalists to cover the exercise.
